How often should you have an eye test?

Every two years for most adults — but there are good reasons to come sooner, and they are not all about your glasses.

The short answer is every two years for most adults. The longer answer depends on your age, your health and your family.

Who should come every year

Children, people over seventy, anyone with diabetes, and anyone whose parent or sibling has glaucoma. These are groups where eye conditions can change quickly and silently.

What an eye test actually checks

Your prescription is only part of it. We check the pressure in your eyes, your field of vision and the health of the retina and optic nerve — which is why an eye test can be the first place signs of diabetes or high blood pressure appear.

Most serious eye conditions are painless in their early stages. That is exactly why regular tests matter.

When not to wait

Sudden blurred vision, flashes, new floaters, a curtain across your sight or a painful red eye need to be seen the same day. Call us, or go to an eye casualty department out of hours.
